INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ABOVE AND BELOW GROUND PLANT STRUCTURES: MECHANISMS AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 9, Issue 2,   Pages 197-213 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2021433

Abstract: Material transfer occurs as water and dissolved soil-derived elements transport up the xylem, and a smallfraction of water moving up the xylem with dissolved organic carbon and other solutes down the phloemThe cytosolic nature of sieve tubes accounts for at least some of the cycling of K, Mg and P down the phloem3 assimilation of above ground parts requires organic N transport down phloem

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2017, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 208-219 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2017138

Abstract: Most animals, including humans, produce natural sex hormones such as estrogens: 17β-estradiol (E2) andHowever, in the following year (current study), there was no significant retention of hormones in thefresh, so its pores were available for hydrophobic interactions and held significant concentration of hormonesThe biochar started releasing dissolved organic carbon, which facilitated greater mobility of hormones

Heavy metal accumulation and phytostabilization potential of dominant plant species growing on manganese

YANG Shengxiang,LIANG Shichu,YI Langbo,XU Bibo,CAO Jianbing,GUO Yifeng,ZHOU Yu

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 3,   Pages 394-404 doi: 10.1007/s11783-013-0602-4

Abstract: Screening plants that are hypertolerant to and excluders of certain heavy metals plays a fundamental role in a remediation strategy for metalliferous mine tailings. A field survey of terrestrial higher plants growing on Mn mine tailings at Huayuan, Hunan Province, China was conducted to identify candidate species for application in phytostabilization of the tailings in this region. In total, 51 species belonging to 21 families were recorded and the 12 dominant plants were investigated for their potential in phytostabilization of heavy metals. Eight plant species, , , , , , , , and accumulated much lower concentrations of heavy metals in shoots and roots than the associated soils and bioconcentration factors (BFs) for Cd, Mn, Pb and Zn were all<1, demonstrating a high tolerance to heavy metals and poor metals translocation ability. The field investigation also found that these species grew fast, accumulated biomass rapidly and developed a vegetation cover in a relatively short time. Therefore, they are good candidates for phytostabilization purposes and could be used as pioneer species in phytoremediation of Mn mine tailings in this region of South China.
